Facebook will ban Holocaust denial content on the social network two years after CEO Mark Zuckerberg refused to take down the misinformation.

Why the reversal? Facebook has noticed an increase in anti-Semitism and ignorance about the Holocaust—the very outcome critics were worried would happen if the misinformation persisted on the platform.

“We’ve long taken down posts that praise hate crimes or mass murder, including the Holocaust. But with rising anti-Semitism, we’re expanding our policy to prohibit any content that denies or distorts the Holocaust as well,” Zuckerberg wrote on his

BYU software predicts the rise and fall of every river on earth

By iwano@_84

Innovative streamflow forecasting created by Brigham Young University engineering professors can predict the rise and fall of every river on earth.

Through a partnership with NASA and NOAA and USAID, those BYU-created tools are helping save lives worldwide by helping detect floods and droughts ahead of time.

For example, heavy rains triggered landslides and floods in Nepal that ultimately killed more than 130 people in July. As soon as the rain started falling, Jim Nelson, BYU professor of civil and environmental engineering, knew things could get worse. The streamflow forecasts were warning of severe flooding throughout the country.

The BYU forecasting made it into the hands of emergency agencies in Nepal, saving many lives in what could have been a catastrophic loss of life, a news release stated.

Nelson is quoted as saying:

Our tools help directly assess both flood risk and drought risk. Most communities around the world live

In July heavy rains triggered landslides and floods in Nepal that ultimately killed more than 130 people. As soon as the rain started falling, BYU professor Jim Nelson knew things could get bad.

That’s because the water-modeling software created by Nelson and colleagues from NASA under the Group on Earth Observations Global Water Sustainability (GEOGloWS) Partnership can predict the rise and fall of every river on the face of the planet. And in the case of Nepal, the streamflow forecasts were warning of severe flooding throughout the country.

Fortunately, the predictive models, accessible through the BYU software, made it into the hands of emergency agencies in Nepal, saving many lives in what could have been a catastrophic loss of life.

Nepali officials being able to access this vital information through Nelson’s large-scale visualization hydrologic data
