Apple’s SVP of Software points out that it takes Computational Power to make Apple Pencil’s new ‘Scribble’ feature work in Real Time

By iwano@_84

A computer’s ability to read handwriting, then translate it into letters and numbers it can understand, has been a challenge going back decades. Think of the hit-or-miss capabilities of the Windows Transcriber in the early 2000s, or the PalmPilot in the late ’90s. Handwriting is so nuanced that just analyzing a static letter’s shape doesn’t work.

Alexander George, noted in his Popular Mechanics report that “Apple, it seems, has found a solution. In the newest update to iPadOS, when you write with the Apple Pencil, the iPad can understand your scrawl and, with Scribble, convert it to typed text.

It works like most machine learning—examples inform rules that help predict and interpret a totally new request—but taps into a smarter data set and greater computing power to do what had stumped generations of previous machines.

By iwano@_84

Fifteen years after North Charleston jumped across the Ashley River to annex the 6,600-acre Watson Hill tract in a legal tussle that stretched over six years to the Supreme Court, land clearing has begun for the development of 950 homes on Ashley River Road.

Atlanta-based homebuilder Ashton Woods started construction this month on part of a nearly 500-acre tract it acquired earlier this year for $20 million.

The first 154 acres, across from Mateeba Gardens Road, will house about 300 or so single-family units, according to Robert Norton, division president for Ashton Woods in Charleston.

The remaining 600-plus houses will go on 335 acres to the east and south of the original development.

The 6,600-acre Watson Hill tract, the large pink shaded area south of Ashley River Road in Dorchester County, was annexed into the city of North Charleston in 2005. While much of the site will be preserved from

Air Force may soon be able to update flight software in real time

By iwano@_84

Sept. 17 (UPI) — The Air Force is preparing to announce that an aircraft can push out software updates to warfighters while in flight, a top Pentagon official said this week.

“We’re working on pretty cool announcements coming in the next few weeks with the ability to update the software of a jet while flying,” Nicolas Chaillan, chief software officer for the U.S. Air Force, said. “So that’s the kind of stuff that will be game changing.”

Chaillan is head of the Department of Defense’s DevSecOps initiative, which aims to simplify and speed up software development across the department using a centralized location with baked-in security protocols so developers can deploy software updates quickly throughout the day.

Chaillan, speaking during a webinar this week, did not give many specifics, but the development is part of a larger effort by the Air Force to bring its software practices up to date.
