WTO says EU can put tariffs on $4 billion of US goods

By iwano@_84

GENEVA (AP) — International arbitrators said Tuesday that the European Union can impose tariffs and other penalties on up to $4 billion worth of U.S. goods and services over illegal American support for plane maker Boeing. The move further sours transatlantic ties at a time when the coronavirus has doused trade and savaged economies.

The ruling by the World Trade Organization arbitrators, which could inflame Trump administration criticism of the Geneva-based body, amounts to one of the largest penalties handed down by the WTO.

It comes a year after another ruling authorized the United States to slap penalties on EU goods worth up to $7.5 billion – including Gouda cheese, single-malt whiskey and French wine – over the bloc’s support for Boeing rival Airbus.

Now the EU can have its own turn at trade punishment, and has already been considering which American products it could target. A preliminary list that

By iwano@_84

“Orior is a family business,” Ciaran McGuigan tells AD PRO of the heritage furniture brand founded by his parents in Newry, Ireland, more than 40 years ago. He took the reins as creative director last year, adding a modern twist (and lots of colorful upholstery) to the decades-old brand, and opening a sleek Stateside showroom in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood. Now, Ciaran brings his sister, fashion designer Katie Ann McGuigan, into the fold for Orior’s first-ever rug collection.

The two have always worked together in one way or another. As kids they pitched in with the family business—Katie at the sewing machine; Ciaran helping with odd jobs—and when Ciaran relaunched the brand last year, Katie advised on creative direction. But when brother and sister both returned to their family home in Ireland (she from London; he from New York) during the coronavirus pandemic, they had the time to really hammer

A US judge early Sunday temporarily blocked a Trump administration order requiring Apple and Google to remove the Chinese-owned messaging app WeChat from their app stores.

US Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler in San Francisco said in an order that WeChat users who filed a lawsuit “have shown serious questions going to the merits of the First Amendment claim, the balance of hardships tips in the plaintiffs’ favor.”

The ruling came two days after the Trump administration announced that downloads of WeChat and fellow Chinese-owned app TikTok would be prohibited in the US after Sunday night. US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the bans were designed to protect American consumers and businesses from “the threats of the Chinese Communist Party.”
