Apple’s SVP of Software points out that it takes Computational Power to make Apple Pencil’s new ‘Scribble’ feature work in Real Time

By iwano@_84

A computer’s ability to read handwriting, then translate it into letters and numbers it can understand, has been a challenge going back decades. Think of the hit-or-miss capabilities of the Windows Transcriber in the early 2000s, or the PalmPilot in the late ’90s. Handwriting is so nuanced that just analyzing a static letter’s shape doesn’t work.

Alexander George, noted in his Popular Mechanics report that “Apple, it seems, has found a solution. In the newest update to iPadOS, when you write with the Apple Pencil, the iPad can understand your scrawl and, with Scribble, convert it to typed text.

It works like most machine learning—examples inform rules that help predict and interpret a totally new request—but taps into a smarter data set and greater computing power to do what had stumped generations of previous machines.

While Alexa and Siri rely on a connection to faraway data centers to handle their

Code Differently’s young developers aim to make an impact as they learn

By iwano@_84

Delaware was well represented at Philly Tech Week 2020 presented by Comcast’s Developers Conference on Wednesday, as Wilmington’s Code Differently split its 30-minute time slot between two teams of youth software developers talking through the apps they built in the experimental learning program over the summer.

Young people, Code Differently instructor Roger Campbell II said during the case study session “Building Wakanda: A Delaware Story,” have been intensely impacted by COVID-19, between remote learning, canceled sports and other activities, and not being able to hang out with friends in general. Many teenagers also feel helpless, and are looking for ways to help.

This was reflected in the apps the students created: Zoë Jackson and Destiny Ryals developed an app that allows users to easily find charities and donate to them, the coding process for which they explained in their flash talk. And Prince Adenusi and Eric Tlaseca took

Covid-19 crisis spurred greater API development, survey suggests

By iwano@_84

While the Covid-19 crisis wreaked havoc with many corporate IT plans — pushing many, at least temporarily, into survival mode — API development either remained constant or even expanded. APIs also have been playing a pivotal role in helping organizations operate on a more virtual level.

That’s the word from a recent survey of 13,500 developers and other IT professionals, released by Postman. While Postman, an API development platform, obviously has a horse in this race, the sheer magnitude of this study makes it worth a deep look.

The role of APIs in digital transformation efforts cannot be understated, as they are the building blocks for organizations becoming both producers and consumers of software. Software Developer Drought: Where are you in Demand?

By iwano@_84

Turns out there’s a major need for software developers outside of the traditional geo-center of Silicon Valley. Despite COVID-19, states in the US heartland are actively hiring developers. Plus, professionals on the West Coast are reassessing work-life opportunities and exploring start-up prospects outside the Valley and other tech hotspots.

Eight out of 10 US counties with the highest “Developer Demand” shortage are in states in the middle of America, states such as South Dakota, Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Utah, and Mississippi.

This isn’t a shift to remote workers. In July and August, 92% of software developer job ads on three leading employment sites were for work-on-premises jobs. Apparently, employers are slow to embrace remote working.

The data comes from Mendix, a Siemens business involved in low-code application development. The company recently launched the Mendix 2020 Software Developer Drought Index, an effort to
